How Will I Decide What to Sell?

Years ago, Earl Nightingale, a well-known motivational expert who had a
national radio show, received a question from one of his listeners.
The listener, a young man who was preparing to enter college, asked a
question similar to this one, "What type of work should I do so I can
make the most money, be the most successful, and be the happiest."
Earl Nightingale's reply was along these lines:
Find out what it is that you really love to do. Make sure it's
something that you enjoy doing so much that you would be willing to do
it day-after-day even if nobody paid you. Make that your
life's work, and every day for the rest of your life you will wake up
wanting to go to work and loving your workday.
Over time, others will see, or otherwise sense, your enthusiasm and will be inspired by it.
If you love what you do, you will also be happy to continually learn
more about it, and your learning will propel you to the position of
being considered an expert. If you truly love what you do, you will
always be happy to share your knowledge about, and affection for, this
love of yours with others. Then, when they come to you with
questions or problems about your niche, it will excite you to share your knowledge and
pleasure with them and to be able to provide them with genuine help and
guidance.
Next thing you know, you will be the expert looked up to by others,
sought out by others for guidance, and rewarded both by the pleasure
you gain from life, and the financial rewards others will give you for
your expertise.
If, on the other hand, you should decide to choose a career that means
little or nothing to you other than the financial rewards or accolades
it brings, you will most likely eventually find life to be empty and
unrewarding and each day will become an uphill battle. You will
certainly NOT be inspired to improve your knowledge and skill, and
others will be aware, perhaps eventually acutely aware, of your lack of
interest and enthusiasm. Your work will suffer as will your life and
the lives of those close to you.
If you are still in some way able to hide this and force yourself to
succeed, you will most likely find you live a life of bitterness and
resentment, and, at its end, you may find yourself happy to let go of
this burden yet immeasurably saddened at all the chances you
have lost, or thrown away, for happiness, joy, and love.
Whatever path you choose in life, begin it with love.
So, what does this mean to the Internet entrepreneur? Well, if you
love basketball, perhaps you should try to become involved in
something which involves that. If you love art, perhaps there is a
way to incorporate that into your business plans. Working with what you love
will keep you focused and make you glad to show up for "work" each day.
By the way, the ideas presented in this article were ones I learned
listening to Earl Nighingale as a young man. The words,
however, are mine. I love to write, and every day, I get to
do what I love.
